The Power of Knowing WHO You Are
Written by: Debbie LaChusa
I "should" be sitting in a conference right now.

I am not. I'm in my hotel room writing this article. And after that, we're heading home. It's the first time EVER I have left a conference early. I am one of those people who never misses a session. I might "miss" something important that I need to know. Maybe you can relate.

As entrepreneurs we are bombarded with information and systems and ways to make money and ways to market, and very often feel we HAVE to absorb all of it. What if the ONE thing I miss is the ONE thing I need to make it big? The fear of missing out is huge. Unfortunately, what it usually leads to is overwhelm, fragmentation, and less success.

As I often say, becoming more successful is usually more about letting things go than taking things on.

In fact, yesterday, one of the speakers at this event (who runs a 100 million dollar company by the way and was sharing a few of his secrets to success) said the way to grow your business is to start saying "no" more. Learn to focus. Know that if you take on something new, it has to be more powerful than what you're already doing, because you're going to have to let something go to make room.

Many of us don't do that. We don't let something go to make room for the new.

We just keep piling it on. Until we're so busy running around in a million directions, trying to do it all, that our business suffers instead of growing. I speak from experience. It happened to me. And it ran my successful 6-figure business into the ground.

Then I went through a process to get clear about WHO I am and WHAT was most important to me in my business. And I designed a "filter" that I now use to know what to say yes to and what to say no to. It not only saved my business and got me back up to 6 figures in less than a year, it also now makes it very easy for me to know how to spend my time and NOT feel like I am missing out on anything.

So that's why I'm sitting in my hotel room writing this article to share with you.

And heading home after that, because I know that this conference is not in line with WHO I am and where I'm going in my business.

Don't get me wrong, it's not a bad conference.

There's lots of great people and great information being shared here, it's just not in line with where I'm going in my business right now. It's not my focus. So sitting here one more day, just because I paid to be here, because I think I might miss that ONE thing that's going to take my business to the next level, is crazy. I've already gotten what I need from being here two days. And to be honest, much of that is clarity.

Yes, I learned a few things that I can take back and use in my business, but the more important thing I'm taking away from this conference is more clarity about who I am and what I do.

The contrast of being in an environment with a bunch of people who are doing what I am very clear I DON'T want to be doing provided that clarity.

Contrast is good.

Finding out what we don't want is just as important as finding out what we do want. In fact, it's often the easiest way to find out what we DO want.
